Hello there! A few weeks back I got a huge fancy catalog from Restoration Hardware. I don't know why they keep sending me these things because I never buy anything (shhh, don't tell them!). But, I love to browse them so I hope they keep coming.
I've blogged about Restoration Hardware before (check it out here), how they have some really awesome stuff and some stuff that is just way out there, as in, what are they thinking and they want $$$ for it?!
Their Summer 2012 catalog did not disappoint. There are plenty of amazing pieces and a good amount of crazy too.
Let's start with crazy, shall we?
The new "Deconstructed Collection" line has a bit of the crazies.
See all of those frayed strings, those are the back of the tufts. Note the nail head trim that is made of actual nail heads and not very straight. Also, the rough wood, messy burlapish mesh material and rusty metal piece that holds part of the chair together.
Can you say "C R A Z Y" ??
This might be the weirdest thing I've ever seen in furniture.
This unfinished chair can be all yours for $1495 (plus tax and shipping and handling) More of the crazies!
I love the neutral linen/burlap look, they started out great but then it's like they forgot to finish the chair because... well, they did.
They've got the colors and style right, and most of the pieces have great lines. But this is bizarre, this stuff seems like it belongs in a haunted house.
But, it doesn't look too bad when they put it with this...
But really, are people going to pay $1500 bucks for a half made chair?
Yes.
Can you guess what that makes them??
CRAZY!
You got it.
So not to hurt Restoration Hardware's feelings (yeah right, they are laughing all the way to the bank) I will share some of their awesomeness too.
They need to stick with stuff like this:
Lovely Living Rooms
Beautiful Blues!
Dynamic Dining Rooms!
Beautiful Bedrooms!
I love that bed! Does the headboard look familiar?? It's on special for $1480 for a king. Mine wasn't quite that much. You can see how I made one very similar HERE. :)
So really, I'm a fan of Restoration Hardware, they just get a case of the crazies every season.
What do you think about the Deconstructed Collection? Am I just closed-minded and uncultured or do you agree, RH got a case of the crazies on this one???

That's a SERIOUS case of crazy. I'd be tempted to refinish them, just to get them "done"! If I ever pay $1500 for a chair, I want it completely finished... not to look like the craftsman got bored mid way and went on to another project.
ReplyDeleteBut that's me.. and my taste. I know of others who love this stuff. And they are more than welcome to! To each their own, I guess.
:) Liz
This is crazy, indeed. Soon they will be selling beds with exposed springs saying the exposed springs are the latest trend in high art of mattresses and they will flock to buy that and prolly sleep on it too! LOL
ReplyDeleteOh I so agree, that chair is really, really crazy. In fact, I think it is just plain tacky. Hugs, Marty
ReplyDeleteGeez! Who knew I was being fashionable when I curbed shopped a chair almost just like that for my first apartment! I wonder if theirs smells like cats like mine did? :-)
ReplyDeleteI dunno. I kinda like that Deconstructed stuff once it's put together with the rest of the room. I bet they have no trouble selling it.
ReplyDeleteWith all the DIY craze, it looks like someone just stopped in the middle. :)
I totally agree with you. If it was like $50...then I'd feel like it was more beautiful, haha. I would never spend that much for something like that. The concept is cool, like you said, but it does look unfinished. CRAZY is right.
ReplyDeleteGlad you posted this. I wrote a similar post when the catalog came out. They try to be edgy but sometimes they fall over that edge and it ends up just being ridiculous! People buy crazy things in an attempt to be the most trendy, so I suppose there is a market for it.
ReplyDeleteLOL -- you are seriously so right on this and yes, those chairs are a bit creepy to me. I could never live in a "Restoration Hardware" house -- too heavy, bland and yes, a tad creepy. I do like SOME of their accessories (they send ME their catalogs too and I never buy!).
ReplyDeleteI would be worried about tetanus. HA HA HA HA HA! Not my style or price point!
ReplyDeleteOk I'm going to disagree with you just a little. I kind of like them. Now I wouldn't BUY them but I do have a chair I've been planning to reupholster and I think I just might try to do something like this - just for fun. I love the burlap and the webbing used in upholstery and I like the nails better than the brass headed tacks used to cover up the nails. So call me crazy!!! I just kind of like it - it's different. Guess I'm crazy and tacky - LOL!
ReplyDeleteHi Kate, I enjoyed reading this post. R.H. used to be my FAVORITE store. I even loved it more than Pottery Barn. But I have to say I feel like they've gone the wrong direction. I get their huge catalog as well {& I have purchased a lot in the past}, but I miss COLOR! The catalog looks like all the pics are sepia. Why? Because the colors are so washed out. By page 50 it gets pretty boring. As you pointed out, at least they included some navy some of their recent designs. Some of the pieces just don't speak to me {such as the deconstructed chair}. "Haunted House" just isn't my style! ;D
ReplyDeleteWarmly, Michelle
I see knockoffs coming in blogland except this time instead of reupholstering a chair they will just buy a cheap chair and rip it apart. Since this chair came out months ago I've been thinking what the?
ReplyDeleteI swear my grandfather had a very similar looking "deconstructed" chair in his basement. It even had springs sticking out. Clearly my grandfather was ahead of his time.
ReplyDeleteI get the same catalogs and there is a lot of inspiring stuff in there. But, that "undone" chair is a bit much. Love the finishes, though.
ReplyDeleteThis is a company who is just taking advantage of those out there who "have to have" the latest in everything whether it's reasonable or not. These are very cheap and tacking looking. Some of their other furniture is wonderful, but this is just a joke.
ReplyDeleteIt's absolutely ridiculous! And it's even more ridiculous that people are crazy enough to pay those prices for crap!
ReplyDeleteThey have gone batsh** crazy! I laughed when I saw this. I had seen it and told a friend that it was like the old story, "The Emperor's New Clothes". Did no one say..."Uh, dude...bad idea."???

This post cracked me up! I thought the same thing when I saw it!! Totally crazy! I'd be worried that people would come over and think that I'd attempted a DIY that I couldn't finish.
ReplyDeleteIt's crazy, but then I started kinda liking them. Maybe for movie sets or magazines. Not for the everyday home. FUNNY post though and they may want to take note about having the CRAZIES, as most people think is a bit much.
ReplyDeleteWhat did P.T. Barnum (circus guy) say? "I don't care what they say about me as long as they spell my name right." Any press is better than no press. It's got blogworld talking, doesn't it? ha ha
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting that. It's too funny to think that people will go for something like this!
Linda
That chair looks dangerous, like you'll need a tetanus shot when you get up, lol!
ReplyDeleteI'm all about distressed, or weathered, but that is just creepy.
I totally agree - you can find a more finished chair on the side of the road for free - and then take of some of the siding and there you have it! Plus $1500 in your pocket. Not quite right, RH. Better luck next time.
ReplyDeleteThe first thing I thought of when I saw the first photo is the same as Jamie's comment. That and "Better tell the kids to stay away from this chair" (if I was crazy enough to purchase it). Sure, it looks nice in a quirky kind of way, but nails sticking out is a huge turn off. Consumers should be extra careful when making their purchases.
ReplyDeleteLol
ReplyDeleteI love the Deconstructed 19th C. English Wing Chair . I actually have it in my dinning room with the same table, but the salvage brown color one. It looks so different and everyone that walks into my house really love it too.
I guess everyone likes something different. Right?
