Flaunt it Friday 118 and Blog Thieves

Hey there!

Before we party I have some serious stuff to talk about.

Lame.

Who starts a party with serious stuff?

Bad idea... but it will be quick!

I'm sure you've heard around blogland that content is being stolen from blogs and being used on other blogs without permission of the original blogger.  Not only is the original blogger not being asked if their work can be used but they are not even being credited for the post.  These blog thieves, "scrapper blogs" as their known, steal the blog post and then pass it off as their own!  Some are stealing entire link party posts (Flaunt it Friday anyone?) and putting them up on their sites.

The nerve of these thieves!!

I can't send you to any scrapper sites because that would just increase their traffic so they could make more money off their stolen posts.  I saw one on Facebook that was in Spanish, their page had over one million "likes".

Over one million!!

Seriously!

And they are stealing articles from hardworking and creative bloggers like you and me.

LOOOO-SERRRRS!

They are totally fired!!

But it's unfortunately not as easy as just telling them they're fired losers.  It's actually quite difficult to get them to remove your stolen post.  Especially if they don't speak English.

One of the ways to stop the thieves is to truncate your post.  This means putting a break in your post and RSS feed so that only part of a blog post shows and the reader has to click on a link that says something like "click here to read the rest of this post".

Many of the most popular blogs already do this.  I find it to be annoying to have to click again but really, what's one more click in the scheme of things.  If you're on the computer you're clicking like 500 times a day anyway, right?

So, I'm going to start truncating to protect my posts and hope like crazy my lovely readers won't stop reading or linking up because of that extra little click.  It's really not that big of a deal but if it will keep you from reading my blog, please let me know.  I don't want to lose any of my sweet Chicsters!

Chic on a Shoestring Decorating

So now it's time to party and my first ever truncation (is that even a word? it sounds kinda fun, like a vacation or something, just pretend like when you click the link it'll take you to Disneyland or HomeGoods... which is my happiest place on Earth ;)

  1. I'm still nervous to truncate my posts bc I did when I first started blogging and received a lot of hate mail...so crazy! I think you should totally protect your projects and I hope that since readers have a great explanation...the transition will go super smoothly for you! Let me know...if everyone is friendly, I may take a risk and copy the rest of bloggyworld! XO, Aimee

  3. No problem with having to click one more time if it will keep this from happening. We may all eventually have to do it. Thanks so much for hosting.

  4. I'm sure I won't develop arthritis by giving an extra click. No big deal to me. Some of my pictures were stolen off my blog by a Spanish site. Now I always ensure I have my name on my photos. Thanks for the party!

  6. Isn't it a shame that people are ok with stealing someone else's work?! I do not mind at all giving one more click! And, if anyone complains, I just feel sorry for them that they are so easily disgruntled! Life is going to be tough for them! Thanks so much for hosting! Life to the full, Melissa

  9. Kate, THANK YOU for this post!!!! I just spent the past 25 minutes truncating ALL my high traffic posts. It's a fear of mine that what hard work I have applied to my lil blog would be stolen (happened to me on YouTube so I know how crappy it feels). Thank you again for sharing : )

  11. Good for you! I actually found someone who had copied a few of my old posts (not from my feed, but from my site) entirely and even had MY sidebar photo on their sidebar. mind you, their entire site consisted of jut my posts. I was sooooo upset. I wrote them saying I was going to report them to Google. They emailed me back with some lame excuse and took the posts down.

  14. What a bummer! I cannot believe folks are bold enough to steal and pass it off as their own?!?!?
I certainly don't mind another click- can I count that as a workout?

  15. I am one of those readers going through and cleaning out my blog list - removing all of the blogs that have jumped on the truncating bandwagon. I have very limited time to peruse the blogs I follow and every extra click is one less blog that I can read.... instead I will be following via Pinterest where I can scroll through and find posts I want to read simply by the photos.

  17. I don't understand how a truncated post can protect your content! But anyway, I believe what we sow, we will reap, so those bloggers who just copy content will lose big time! Patsy from

  18. Do what you have to do to keep your blog safe! I agree, they are losers: they can't even dream up their own content. I will still visit, even if I have to "click" once more. All the best!

  19. I've wondered why some sites have link-through buttons. It won't really make a difference to me. An extra click is no big deal to me.

Site scraping makes me so mad. I'm just starting a new site, and it takes hours to create a post and link it up all over the web. It's just not fair for people to steal all of that hard work! Blood, sweat, and tears. That's what we all put into our blogs. Dishonesty is all they put into theirs!

  20. Not worried about a little click... it's not exactly hard. Can't believe the nerve of some people... have they no shame?! Seriously. Anyhoo Thanks for hosting :) Jo x

  21. Hi Kate, I will do an extra click for you anyday. I am truncating my posts as well. Didn't know it would deter the scrappers. I did it because my grandson told me to. He said it was taking my page too long to load. He was right. I would rather do the extra click than watch the little circle going and going while I wait for a page to load.
Question! How do you find if someone is scrapping you? I have a gazillion hits from Russia and I never have anyone from Russia comment or make contact. I don't know how to backtrack their hits. Any help is desired because It is really funny that I have so much Russian hits.
    Thanks for hosting, Ginger

  40. I support the click-thru.
My ENTIRE website is plagiarized on a wiki site. I mean, right down to my typos. I am very careful to honor copyright and credits for photographers, students, yogin, etc., but no. There it is without a thought to how just plain wrong it is to steal other people's work.

I'm new to reading blogs. Mostly don't care what people think, but care more about what they're doing. The DIY thing. I'm thrilled and fascinated by people's creativity. I'm glad I found yours. :)
