31 Days of Decorating on a Shoestring Budget Day 22: Rugs

Hey guys!  Welcome back to my never-ending series of decorating on a shoestring budget. ;)

Day 22:  Rugs

Rugs are a decorating budget buzz-kill.  They can be crazy expensive and eat up a huge portion of your budget if you're not careful.  So what's a girl to do?

I've got a few tricks up my sleeve for getting a good rug without busting your budget.

First, consider getting an indoor/outdoor rug.  These are usually far less expensive than an indoor only rug.  They are also very kid-friendly because they hide stains and can be cleaned off easily with a little water and elbow grease.  I have an indoor/outdoor rug under my kitchen table and I love it!

It has probably had about 5  bottles worth of ketchup spilled and splattered all over it over the past couple of years and you really can't tell.

This rug was purchased at CSN.com a few years back but they are no longer in business.  Places like Target and Lowes get a good selection of nice patterns and sizes of inexpensive indoor/outdoor rugs in the spring but you can get them on their websites all year long.

Another option to save money on an indoor rug is to have a carpet remnant bound to the size you need.  This is an especially good option if you need a really large rug.  Binding prices vary  regionally so call around your city to see who has the best price nearby.

If you have a carpet remnant already there are lots of videos and tutorials on binding it yourself.  I have never done it but this is your cheapest option and might be worth a shot if your budget is really tight and you have a remnant to work with.

Have you bound your own rug?  What was your experience??

  1. I called pottery barn and asked if they had floor models in the back. The manager met me on a Thursday night before closing, showed me tons, I bought three and made her an offer. Best rugs ever.

  2. Thanks for the great ideas! We have tons of carpet left over from a recent installation, so I might have to tackle the task of binding it myself!

  3. Wow, I never thought of using an indoor/outdoor rug!! That is a great idea, and I remember seeing one I liked at Lowes and thought...wow, that is really nice. I just might go back and get it.

  4. Indoor/outdoor rug - you are a genius, apart from the budget, with 5 kids it's such a great idea for cleaning. Thanks so much for sharing.

  5. With a huge red dog and boys galore in and out of my home, I have yet to not use indoor/outdoor rugs. They are indestructible and perfect for cleanup (which I do often). The tip above about floor models is genius :)

  6. When we moved into our new home two years ago, we inherited tile floors in the main living areas. So I was on a mission to find area rugs for the Living Room, Dining Room, and Family Room. Boy was I in sticker shock!!!! My sister in love told the to check Home Goods, and was it ever a pleasant surprise. The rugs are very reasonable, and they have an amazing selection. Because their inventory moves out so quickly, they are always bringing in new designs. We purchased two rugs there, and to my amazement I found the perfect one for the Family Room at Sam's Club!! Another surprise for me. Each of these rugs are very good quality, and the price was sometimes more then half off other retail stores.

  7. I didn't even pay attention to the rug...I was too busy liking your kitchen set...I've been wanting to paint mine but I'm torn between black or white...but now you have me thinking.

  8. Don't forget about places like overstock and RugsUSA. They both almost always have coupon sales - we scored a really nice 9x11 rug for the living room for $150. Buying a rug site unseen was a little intimidating so we made sure to read the customer reviews before we ordered.

  9. I have sent carpeting to have bound to use as area rugs. It costs in the area of $100.00. I am usiing my in-laws white living room carpet in my bedroom and my old familyroom carpeting in my new houses basement man cave.

  10. Sorry I'm a bit late in commenting. I really love your dining set and that awesome rug! It' totally reminded me of my favorite one ever. I found it at Goodwill, brand new, wool with ididvidual loops for $40!! What a find. THEN...along came my Labrador and *poof* and there went the rug! I will ahve to look for an indoor/outdoor similar to the pattern you chose. I just love it!
