31 Days of Decorating on a Shoestring Budget Day 10: Nature

Hi and welcome back to my 31 Days of Decorating on a Shoestring Budget series.   Don't worry, if you missed a date (or the whole thing) you can catch up on my series here:

Day 10:  Nature- free decor is in your own backyard!

There are so many beautiful and free decorations in nature.  Unfortunately, we often overlook these things we see everyday outside, we see them as leaves or sticks or even weeds sometimes.  But some of those things make beautiful decorations in our home.

The best thing is, they're free!!

fall decor

Pine cones are great in decor and despite their popularity during Fall and Christmas can really be used any time of the year.  Maybe you are lucky enough to have some in your backyard (or your neighbors?)  You might be able to find some in a park, just make sure you only take the ones off the ground and don't pull them off the trees.  Of course you can buy them too but hopefully you or someone you know has some lying around in their yard.

pressed leaf art
With a pretty dried leaf, some scrapbook paper, a frame and Mod Podge you can easily create some pretty art very inexpensively.

decorative sticks
Branches in a vase make a big statement for little to no money.  Use on a table or on the floor.  Find branches the same way you find pine cones.  Just don't break them off of trees in a park, you can be fined (which would defeat the purpose of free decor, not good.)

Most ornamental grasses need to be cut down before winter, stick them in a vase for a very Fall-ish centerpiece.

Calamagrostis 'Karl Foerster'

There are tons of other natural items that will look great in your home, especially this time of year. Decor is all around you, you just have to look at things differently.  (And don't get arrested for trespassing or damaging nature.) :)

  1. Great job. I have the same apothecary jars. I just posted with one last night.

  2. I love these tips! The people down the street have a pine tree that I'm sooo excited to get pine cones from! they fall all over the street and will be so pretty in a glass jar like in your picture!

  3. I love the branches in a vase - I would put them in every corner and on every surface (would that be overkill???). LOL!

  4. My yard is so full of leaves it's crazy...I can rake and an hour later it doesn't even look like it...LOL...I may have to go out and scoop up some good leaves and then run to my neighbors house for some pine cones...Great idea!!!

  5. I love these ideas! We home school and I have 4 kids, we live on 9 acres and at Christmas every year I refuse to display bought decor so we go around and make our own wreaths, cut our own holly, etc. to decorate our home. I love decorating on a tight budget and being creative. is also a great place to shop on a budget!

I L-O-V-E love your comments! :) I read and try to respond to every one! Thanks for taking your precious time to leave me a comment.
